Comment:
Necator americanus - anterior and posterior ends of rhabditoid larva. Note long buccal cavity and pointed tail (c.f. S.stercoralis larvae have a short buccal cavity and larger genital primordium; Trichostrongylus sp. have a long buccal cavity but an even smaller genital primordium and a knob on the end of the tail). To detect light infections of hookworm, Strongyloides or Trichostrongylus sp. faeces should not be refrigerated and should be cultured; modified agar plate method (Koga et al 1991) is recommended; warranted in those travelling from endemic areas or ex-prisoners of war.
